When we forgive,
perhaps at first we manage our willingness to choose that forgiveness
by assuming that the forgiven ones will eventually
be confronted in experience with the errors of their ways
and take the consequences of the behaviours
we have so magnificently forgiven them for.
With that projection
we find ourselves able to forgive.
Later we don’t need those trainer wheels.
