The apprenticeship of the writer began with grammar and structure and meaning. The writer began to learn to be interesting. The master then delivered the fledgling writer into the abyss and left him alone for many years. The writer began to learn he is nothing. The master and the writer sit together now on the edge of that abyss, dangling their feet like truant school boys.
